5. Methods to prevent wire rope corrosion damage


Steel wire ropes are generally used in the open air. Exposure to the sun and rain will cause corrosion of the wire ropes. Especially for steel wire ropes used in harmful gases and harsh environments, the damage caused by corrosion will be more serious. There are differences in oxygen affinity on the surface of steel wire ropes damaged by corrosion, causing a certain local metal on the surface to become an anode, and another adjacent local metal to become a cathode, forming a large number of small batteries. Under the influence of small batteries, many circular corrosion pits are formed on the surface and gradually deepen. These pits become stress concentration points and the source of fatigue cracks. At the same time, corrosion reduces the cross-sectional area of the wire rope, its elasticity, and its ability to withstand impacts.

 

There are two ways to prevent corrosion and damage to wire ropes. One is to apply oil frequently. Oiling is essential for wire ropes that are often in motion. The hemp core of new steel wire ropes generally contains 12% to 15% of grease, while the scrapped steel wire ropes only contain 2.4% of grease in the part with the greatest loss. At the end of the same wire rope, even if it has not passed through the pulley, it still contains 12.7% to 14.5%. of grease. Tests have shown that the number of broken wires in oiled steel wire ropes in the later stages of the test is about half that of unoiled wire ropes. The initial oil content of a steel wire rope can only last 40% of its life. If it is not refueled, the number of broken wires will increase sharply. Second, special steel wire ropes such as galvanized and aluminized can be selected for steel wire ropes that are used in harsh environments and have relatively little movement. When these steel wire ropes are exposed to the atmosphere, the zinc-plated or aluminum-plated surfaces will form zinc hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide films, which can effectively prevent corrosion of the steel wire ropes.
