What are the inspection standards for wire ropes in 2022?

One accessory that goes hand in hand with any kind of lifting equipment: the wire rope.

With the development of the industry, relevant practitioners now know more and more about cranes. 

Whether it is from the classification of cranes, the use of cranes or the maintenance methods of cranes, they have been more or less in the previous articles. 

Explain, this article mainly explains one of the important accessories of cranes - steel wire rope.

Wire rope can be used in various types of hoisting cranes such as bridge cranes, gantry cranes, electric hoists, jib cranes, etc. 

(whether 5 ton jib crane or 10 ton gantry crane or 25 ton overhead crane or other)

It plays an extremely important role in hoisting.

So, how important is it? If a crane does not have a suitable wire rope, there will be many tragic accidents. 

I will analyze and explain the knowledge of wire rope from three directions:

1. Inspection content of wire rope:

Wire rope should be checked before use: broken wire, wear, corrosion, bending, deformation, lubrication;

2. Inspection mode implemented by wire rope:

There are two inspection modes for wire ropes: daily inspection and regular inspection;

(1) The daily inspection of the wire rope is the self-inspection; once a month: the daily inspection only checks the currently used binding rope:

(2) The regular inspection of the wire rope is more complicated than the daily inspection.

It needs to determine whether to use quarterly inspection or annual inspection according to the device form, utilization rate, environment and the results of the last inspection;

For example: the wire rope workshop used for the overhaul of the steam turbine decided to adopt the annual inspection system, which is inspected once a year;

The wire ropes of special equipment cranes and electric hoists (whether 5 ton electric hoist or 10 ton electric hoist or other) are inspected and maintained once a quarter and a year, 

and a quarterly inspection system is adopted;

3. What are the inspection standards for wire ropes?

(1) Broken wires: count the number of broken wires, including external and internal broken wires.

Even if there are 2 broken wires on the same wire, the statistics should be counted according to the number of broken wires.

If the broken part of the wire exceeds its own radius, it should be treated as broken wire.

(2) Wear: Wear inspection is mainly the measurement of wear state and diameter.

There are two states of wear: one is concentric wear and the other is eccentric wear.

Eccentrically worn wire ropes mostly occur in occasions where the movement of the rope is not large, the spreader is heavy, and the tension changes greatly.

(3) Corrosion: There are two types of corrosion: external corrosion and internal corrosion.

Inspection of external corrosion: visually inspect the wire rope for rust, pitting, and loose wire;

Internal corrosion is not easy to inspect: if it is a wire rope with a smaller diameter (≤20mm), the wire rope can be bent by hand for inspection;

If the diameter is large, an internal inspection is required. 

After the inspection, the wire rope should be restored to its original state, taking care not to damage the rope core and adding lubricating grease.

(4) Deformation: Visual inspection of the wire rope for knots, waves, flatness, etc.

The wire rope should not be knotted, nor there large wave deformation.

(5) Bending: The wire rope should not have bending phenomena such as kinks, dead ends, and hard bends;

(6) Lubrication inspection of wire rope the wire rope should be in a good lubricated state.

The steel wire rope should be oiled once a year. When oiling, it is best to soak the rope core with hot oil (about 50 ℃), and then wipe off the excess grease. 

(If it is a special industry such as food, you must purchase relevant cranes according to industry standards)
