How To Maintain Overhead Crane?
Oct 28, 2024
As we all know, the overhead cranes have so many parts. Depending on the different technical characteristics of each part in practical work, we divide the maintenance and inspection cycles into weekly, monthly, and annual periods. The specific details of each cycle are as follows:
Weekly inspection and maintenance
Inspect and maintain the bridge crane once a week. The following are the inspection and maintenance items:
- Check if the wire rope on the drum and pulley is wound normally, and whether there is any slipping, stringing, knotting, twisting, etc. Are the wire rope clamp bolts tightened? Do they have double-nut anti-loosening devices?
- Check if the fastening screws of the coupling on the lifting mechanism linkage are loose or missing.
- Check whether the brake's nuts, open pins, positioning plates are complete and loose; and whether the lever and spring have cracks. whether the pins and screws of the brake wheel are loose or complete; whether the brake is reliable. When the brake is released, the opening of the brake shoe should be less than 1.0mm and the distance between the brake shoe and the brake wheel on both sides should be equal. No axle pin should be jammed.
- Check if the safety protection and limit switch are accurately positioned and work flexibly and reliably. In particular, whether the upper limit switch is reliable.
- Check if the transmission of each mechanism is normal and whether there are any abnormal noises.
- Check if the lubrication conditions of all lubrication points are good.
- Check whether any foreign objects may hinder the bridge crane operation on the track.

Monthly inspections and maintenance
The overhead cranes should be inspected and maintained once a month, and the inspection and maintenance content should include the following in addition to the weekly content:
- Check the wear of the brake shoe lining pad, which should not exceed 2mm, and the contact area with the brake wheel should not be less than 70%. Check the installation and wear of the pins and the lubrication condition. The wear of the pins should not exceed 5% of the original diameter, and the wear of the small axis and spindle should not exceed 5% of the original diameter and the eccentricity should be less than 0.5mm.
- Check the wear of the wire rope and whether there are broken wires. Check the lubrication condition of the wire rope.
- Check whether the hook has cracks and whether the dangerous section wear exceeds 5% of the original thickness. Check whether the locknut anti-loosening device is complete and whether all the parts of the hook group are complete and reliable. The hook should rotate flexibly without any jamming.
- Check the wear of the wire rope on the balancing pulley, and lubricate the pulley, pulley shaft, and the gear.
- Check the condition of the pulley, whether it is flexible, whether it is damaged or cracked, and especially pay attention to the wear of the fixed pulley shaft.
- Check the brake wheel, the surface unevenness should not exceed 1.5mm, and the brake wheel should not have cracks, the radial runout should be less than 0.3mm.
- Check the coupling, the key and key slot on the coupling should not be damaged or loose; the axial clearance between the two coupling should be within 2~7mm.
Semi-annual inspections and maintenance
The bridge cranes should be inspected and maintained every six months, in addition to the monthly inspection, the following should be included:
- Check the deformation of the main beam and the track of the trolley. The deflection of the main beam under empty load should not exceed 1/2000 of its span; the lateral bending of the main beam towards the center should not exceed 1/1500 of the measured length; the trolley track should not produce a jamming phenomenon; the wear (single-sided) of the top and side surfaces of the track should not exceed 3mm.
- Check the condition of the drum, the wear of the drum wall should not exceed 20% of the original wall thickness, and the peak of the toothed groove should not become sharp.
- Tighten all the connecting bolts and fasteners on the crane.
- Check the tooth contact and wear of all the gears in the reducers, the spot wear damage on the tooth surface should not exceed 30% of the meshing surface, and the depth should not exceed 10% of the original tooth thickness; the wear of the tooth thickness compared with the original tooth thickness should not exceed 15%~25%; check the condition of the bearings; replace the lubricating oil.
- Check the condition of the wheels of the main and small trolleys, and lubricate the wheel axle bearings to eliminate the phenomenon of rail biting.
- Check whether there are any welding defects or rust on the main beam and end beam and whether the rust exceeds 10% of the original plate thickness; check whether there are fatigue cracks on the main and end beam and other main load-bearing parts; check whether the guardrails, supports and other accessories are complete; check and tighten the bolts of the main beam and end beam.
