How To Choose the Right Gantry Crane?
Gantry cranes are commonly used for heavy lifting in industries such as construction, shipping, manufacturing and transportation.
There are different types of gantry cranes on the market with different capacities, mobility options and capabilities. Properly sized and rated gantry cranes ensure that loads are handled safely without accidents due to overloading, tipping or structural failure.
Electric gantry cranes are suitable for occasions where there are tracks on the ground, such as freight yards and workshops. There are single main girder gantry cranes (≤20t) and double main girder gantry cranes.
Gantry cranes are versatile machines used in various industries such as construction, shipyards, and logistics. They come in different types and sizes, depending on their specific application. Here are several kinds of common gantry cranes:
1. Rail-mounted gantry crane (RMG) - This type of gantry crane is used in container handling ports and intermodal yards. It has a high lifting capacity and can move containers over long distances. RMGs are typically operated by computer systems, and they run on rails for smooth movement.

2. Rubber-tired gantry crane (RTG) - This type of gantry crane is used in container yards and log yards. It is similar to an RMG but runs on rubber tires instead of rails, providing flexibility for moving containers around the yard.

3. Single girder gantry crane - This type of gantry crane has one beam that runs the length of the structure. It is used in small manufacturing and warehouse facilities to move lighter loads.

4. Double girder gantry crane - This type of gantry crane has two beams that run parallel to each other. It is used in heavy-duty applications such as shipyards and steel mills to lift heavy loads.

5. Mobile gantry crane - This type of gantry crane can be moved around a site using wheels or tires. It is commonly used in construction sites to lift and move heavy materials.
6. Semi-gantry crane - This type of gantry crane is designed with one end of the structure supported by a building or structure, while the other end is supported by a single leg. It is commonly used in factories and workshops.

7. Cantilever gantry crane - This type of gantry crane has a beam that extends beyond the support legs. It is used in shipyards to lift and move heavy loads from the dock to the ship.

Gantry cranes come in various types and sizes, each designed for a specific application. Understanding the different types of gantry cranes is crucial when choosing the right equipment for a specific job.
Selection Method of Gantry Crane
1. Selection of single girder and double girder gantry cranes
Under normal circumstances, the lifting capacity is less than 50t, the span is less than 35m, and there are no special requirements for use.
The single main girder type should be selected. If the door leg width is required to be large, the working speed is high, or heavy and long parts are frequently lifted, a double-girder gantry crane should be selected.
2. Span and cantilever length
The span of a gantry crane is an important factor affecting the quality of the crane itself. In the selection, the span should be reduced as much as possible under the premise of meeting the equipment use conditions and meeting the span series standards.
3. Determination principle of wheel base
(a) It can meet the stability requirements of the mast along the direction of the crane track;
(b) The overall dimensions of the cargo must be able to pass through the outrigger plane steel frame smoothly;
(c) Pay attention to make the wheelbase B and the span S have a certain proportional relationship. Generally, the wheelbase B=(1/4—1/6)S.
4. Determination of the distance between gantry cranes
During work, there should be a certain space between the external dimensions of the gantry crane and the cargo and transport vehicle passages in the yard to facilitate loading and unloading operations. Generally, when the transport vehicles are loaded and unloaded within the span, there should be a distance of more than 0.7m from the door legs. There should be a distance of more than 0.5m between the spreader and the transport vehicle when it is not working, and a distance of more than 0.5m when the goods pass through the door legs.
5. Selection of electrical equipment for gantry cranes
It should comply with the relevant provisions of GB/T14406-1993 for general-purpose gantry cranes.
